Walmart Rings in the New Year by Helping America's Families Save Money and Get Healthy

With Operation Main Street savings cresting $400 million through the holidays, Walmart launches Phase Two for 2009

January 7, 2009 – Less than one week into 2009, Walmart signaled its intention to maintain its position as America’s low-price leader by announcing Phase Two of its Operation Main Street initiative. With $400 million of savings in customers’ pockets since the launch of the program in November, Walmart believes its ongoing commitment to cutting costs and unbeatable prices for Americans will play a vital role at this time when both customers’ health and the health of the economy are on many Americans’ minds.

“At Walmart, we’re committed to offering low prices every day, not just at Christmas,” said Dr. John Agwunobi, Walmart senior vice president and president, health and wellness. “While many are still wary of Wall Street, Operation Main Street helps families coast-to-coast save on the items they need most. From January through December this year, our customers can count on us to work tirelessly every day to save them money so they can live better.”

Phase Two of Operation Main Street will begin with significant savings on products that help people live healthier lives. Beginning in stores this week, Walmart will offer Rollbacks to help consumers fulfill their resolutions while stretching their dollars with lower prices on:

With losing weight, exercising, and quitting smoking among the top New Year’s resolutions, Walmart has launched its first-ever January Healthy Living initiative. Tagged “being healthy costs less at Walmart,” the merchandise and marketing campaign includes special signage in stores and national television advertising.

Additionally, in the coming days Walmart will announce efforts focused on offering its customers solutions to living a healthier lifestyle.
