Beyonce surprises fans at Walmart

Some Walmart shoppers got more than they bargained for when Beyoncé turned up for a surprise visit.

The superstar stopped by a Tewksbury, Mass., Walmart on Friday night, where she greeted fans and did a little holiday shopping. In her cart? A copy of her new self-titled album and a baby doll for Blue Ivy.

Queen Bey even got on the store's loudspeaker and offered to pay the first $50 of every customer's holiday shopping.

"It's Beyoncé! And I stopped by the store today because my record has arrived," she said. "I want to give everyone a gift. For everyone in the store right now, the first $50 of your holiday gifts are on me. Merry, merry Christmas from Beyoncé!"

The store handed out a total of 750 $50 gift cards enclosed within envelopes that read, "Happy Holidays from Beyoncé."

Bringing Holiday Hope to New Hope

New Hope is an organization that serves children who have one or both parents in prison. In the state with the highest percentage of women in prison, their mission is to break the cycle of generational incarceration, one child at a time. The children in this program range from 5 – 18. Walmart brought the holidays to these children. We surprised each of the 200 children with gifts from their personal Christmas wish list, clothing essentials, coats and groceries.  We also surprised the organization with supplies to assist with program activities - including various art supplies, sporting equipment and camping supplies. In addition, New Hope received 25 tablets and computers to help students with their homework as previously, volunteers of the program were lending their personal computers.

Stay healthy this season

Protect yourself and your family with flushots provided by Walmart Immunization Centers powered by Summit Health. These immunizations are administered by Walmart pharmacists or Summit Health nurses in thousands of Walmart stores.

In addition to flu immunizations, Walmart pharmacists also offer up to 10 other immunizations in select Walmart locations. To learn more about the immunizations offered by your local Walmart pharmacist, use the immunization locator tool to find the store nearest you.

Influenza (flu) is a serious and contagious disease caused by influenza virus that can lead to hospitalization and in some occasions, death. Flu symptoms usually last for a few days and can include fever, sore throat, chills, fatigue, cough, headache and muscle or body aches.

Certain people are at greater risk for serious complications if they get the flu. This includes older people, young children, pregnant women and people with certain health conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease).

You may be able to pass the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Most adults may be able to infect others beginning one day before symptoms develop and up to five to seven days after becoming sick.

The “seasonal flu season” in the United States can begin as early as October and last as late as May. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Walmart Turns Up Holiday Heat

Holiday shoppers don’t have to wait until Black Friday to start shopping for deals at Walmart. At 8 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, Walmart will kick off a pre-Black Friday savings event in stores and online, lowering the prices on popular toys and electronics, to match select Black Friday offers from Target, Toys R’ Us and Best Buy one week early.
Beginning today, the retailer also extends its Christmas Ad Match* to Walmart.com customers. Customers who purchase an item on Walmart.com, and find a lower price in a local brick and mortar competitor. The same policy is in place for customers at Walmart stores for items purchased Nov. 1 through Dec. 24, excluding Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday.

“Black Friday is our Super Bowl and we plan to win,” said Duncan Mac Naughton, chief merchandising and marketing officer, Walmart U.S. “With six fewer days from Thanksgiving to Christmas, the retail environment is more competitive than ever. Every opportunity to get a great deal – whether this weekend, on Thanksgiving Day or Black Friday weekend – matters for our customers. When it comes to price, we’re going to deliver for them.”

On Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and any of their shopping trips, customers can take advantage of the everyday ad match policy* available at Walmart stores. If a customer spots a lower price on an advertised item, and comes into a Walmart store during the same day and time that the competitor’s ad is valid, Walmart will match the price at the register.

Walmart’s official Black Friday events will take place at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day and 8 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 29. The retailer will offer 21 one-hour guarantee items, “Manager Specials” and more hot deals than ever on the season’s top gifts. Starting early on Thanksgiving morning, customers can shop on Walmart.com for some of the Black Friday deals that will also be available in stores. Customers can also take advantage of hundreds of online specials on Thanksgiving and Black Friday while supplies last.

Walmart Announces Plans for Black Friday 2013

Walmart unveiled its largest Black Friday plans to date, including seven times the number of one-hour guaranteed items compared to last year, “Manager Specials” and even more hot deals on the season’s top gifts. The retailer will hold Black Friday events at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving and 8 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 29.

“Black Friday is our day – our Super Bowl – and we’re ready to prove once again that no one does it better than Walmart,” said Bill Simon, president and CEO, Walmart U.S. “We’re excited to give our customers an incredible Black Friday with shopping hours that will allow them to take advantage of great prices on Thanksgiving night and all weekend long.”

Compared to last year, Walmart will offer 65 percent more inventory on televisions and double the number of tablets—some of the most popular Black Friday items. The retailer not only has more products, but lower prices too. For example, this year a 32” LED TV will be available at Walmart for $98. Last Black Friday, a 32” LED TV sold for $148 at Walmart.

“Delivering for our customers wouldn’t be possible without our associates. They are a critical component of our success throughout the year, and especially during the holiday season,” added Simon. “We appreciate each associate and the time they are dedicating to serve the families who shop our stores. As we have in the past, we’ll be recognizing their hard work with additional pay and free meals during their shifts. This year, as a special thanks, associates who work on Thanksgiving Day will receive a 25 percent discount on an entire purchase this holiday season.”

Details on Walmart’s Black Friday events include:

One-Hour Guarantee – It’s Back and Better!
In 2012, Walmart introduced the industry’s first One-Hour Guarantee, a Black Friday event that guaranteed customers select items during a one-hour period. Due to an overwhelmingly positive response from customers, the retailer is bringing it back and expanding from the three items offered last year to 21 One-Hour Guarantee items this year.

Customers who are in the designated lines at Walmart between 6 and 7 p.m. or 8 and 9 p.m. local time on Thursday, Nov. 28 can purchase top gifts at special low prices with confidence that they’ll receive the item either that night or before Christmas.

Walmart Implementing Worker Safety Initiatives in Bangladesh

Walmart is working every day to improve worker safety in Bangladesh. In fact, we did not have sourcing in the Rana Plaza factory specifically because it did not meet our safety standards. While there are many challenges ahead, we are committed to being part of the solution. In light of recent factory tragedies, this work is more important now than ever. Over the past several months we’ve taken a number of actions related to worker safety, empowerment and transparency, including the following:

Safety Inspections & Factory Improvement - We have partnered with Bureau Veritas to conduct in-depth electrical and building safety inspections of all factories sourcing directly to Walmart in Bangladesh. Walmart is paying for these inspections to support our suppliers and the facility owners. We have committed $50 million of low cost capital available to factory owners to help with the necessary remediations. As part of the inspection process a team of two to eight experienced civil and electrical engineers conduct in-depth electrical and building safety reviews of each factory. This process has already begun, and usually takes up to 10 days per facility.

Worker Safety Training - As part of both our partnership with Bureau Veritas, and  a donation we have made to the Institute of Sustainable Communities to establish The Environmental Health and Safety Academy, we are providing important worker safety training to workers and factory owners in Bangladesh.

Unauthorized Subcontracting - We have implemented a zero-tolerance policy for unauthorized subcontracting. This includes any undisclosed subcontracting conducted with or without the supplier’s knowledge.

Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety - We are working with more than 20 brands and retailers to develop common fire and building safety standards as part of our work with the Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety.

In addition to these enhancements to our program, Walmart has implemented a number of programs over the past several years to support local suppliers and workers including:

Through Walmart’s British-based Asda banner, we have been improving the jobs for more than 17,000 workers in 34 factories in Bangladesh through our Lean Manufacturing program. Through this program workers are able to become more empowered through job skills and factory efficiency training.
In 2013, we launched a program aimed at empowering the women who work in Walmart’s supply chain factories through the company’s Women in Factories program. This program is teaching 60,000 women critical life skills including conflict resolution, communications, skills, personal health and wellness.
For many years we have been working with our supplier partners and their factories to help them develop the capability to improve working conditions by investing in education, training and operational efficiencies through our Supply Chain Capacity building programs including the Supplier Development Program, Violation Correction Training, Orange School Program and Supplier Round Tables.

Gonzales Walmart Welcomes Customers to Relocated Store

A newly relocated Walmart will open Wednesday, Oct. 23, after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7 a.m. The new store at 1114 E. Sarah Dewitt Drive is conveniently located at the corner of East Sarah Dewitt Drive and Church Street and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will provide Gonzales residents with one-stop shopping convenience for their grocery and general merchandise needs. The store is relocating from its previous location at 1620 Sarah Dewitt Drive. The store also offers pharmacy services.

"The relocated Walmart is a welcome addition to Gonzales. We welcome the new jobs, services and offerings it brings," said Daisy Scheske, executive director of the Gonzales Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. "Walmart has been a Gonzales Chamber of Commerce member, community partner and employer here for 33 years since the store originally opened in 1980."

One-Stop Shopping Convenience - The store features quality, value-priced general merchandise, including apparel, electronics, toys, sporting goods, and lawn and garden items. It also offers a full line of groceries, including organic and natural selections in addition to local favorites. Some local products available include Purina Dog Chow, Kitchen Pride mushrooms, Adams Extract, Fiesta Spices and Tyson Foods chicken.

The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.

Community Giving In addition to the grants given this year to local community groups, the new store will further Walmart's pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart's and the Walmart Foundation's $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in Texas donated approximately 43.7 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2013, or the equivalent of 36.4 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $86.2 million in fiscal year 2013 in Texas alone.

New Store, New Jobs - The newly relocated store employs approximately 200 full- and part-time associates, including 85 jobs created by the relocation. Store manager Adan Davila began his Walmart career in 2005 as a stocker in Port Lavaca. Several associates have been with Walmart since the original store opened in Gonzales in 1980. Forty associates have worked for Walmart for 10 years or more.

"We look forward to serving customers while they enjoy a pleasant experience shopping at Walmart. We are a convenient, one-stop shop that will save people time, effort and money," said Davila. "We are committed to continue the legacy that Walmart was founded on, which is everyday low prices. Everyone is invited to join us to celebrate the opening of the new store."

A Big Family Welcome - Walmart is happy to be part of the Gonzales community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday, Oct. 26. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Davila and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.

Focusing on improving the medical care their employees receive while reducing costs to employees, Walmart, Lowe’s and other large employers joined the Pacific Business Group on Health Negotiating Alliance (PBGH-NA) to launch a national Employers Centers of Excellence Network that will offer no-cost knee and hip-replacement surgeries for employees at four hospital systems in the United States.

“These companies are working to help make sure that their employees get higher quality care and incur lower costs,” said David Lansky, president and chief executive officer of PBGH. “The Employers Centers of Excellence Network is designed to serve as a model for delivering high quality health care with transparent and predictable costs.”

The four designated center of excellence health care organizations include Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, Md.; Kaiser Permanente Orange County Irvine Medical Center in Irvine, Calif.; Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Mo.; and Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Wash.

PBGH, working with health care management company Health Design Plus, will oversee the new national Employers Centers of Excellence Network (ECEN), which will include treatment for knee and hip replacement surgeries for the more than 1.5 million employees and their dependents enrolled in Walmart’s, Lowe’s and other large employers’ medical plans. Employees will receive consultations and care covered at 100 percent without deductible or coinsurance, plus travel, lodging and living expenses for the patient and a caregiver. Patients must be healthy enough to travel for the surgeries. The program is voluntary and employees or their covered dependents can still choose to receive care from local providers and incur routine costs.

“This national program is about providing our associates with exceptional care and reducing their medical costs so that they pay nothing out of pocket when they use one of the designated facilities,” said Sally Welborn, senior vice president of global benefits at Walmart. ”Each of these providers has a proven record of practicing evidence-based medicine with above average positive patient outcomes in knee and hip replacement procedures.”

“Under this program, employees and their dependents covered under Lowe’s medical plan have access to medical care at renowned medical facilities at no cost,” said Randy Moon, Lowe’s vice president of international human resources, benefits and human resources information systems. “This is especially important for our employees who live in areas underserved by high quality health care providers. The four health care centers are located throughout the U.S., making it easier for employees who wish to use this benefit to travel.”

The national Employers Centers of Excellence Network complements Centers of Excellence programs that Walmart and Lowe’s have and will continue to offer separately from the alliance with PBGH-NA.

In 2013, Walmart expanded its long-standing program covering transplants at the Mayo Clinic to also include treatment for certain heart and spine surgeries at five leading hospital and health systems in the U.S., including ECEN providers Virginia Mason and Mercy Springfield, for associates and their covered dependents enrolled in medical plans.

In 2010, Lowe’s began an alliance with Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, to provide its full-time employees and their covered dependents enrolled in the company’s self-funded medical plans enhanced benefits coverage for qualifying heart surgery procedures.

GP Stan 10 (Winstrol)

Stanozolol, most commonly known as Winstrol or Winny is a powerful anabolic steroid that can be found in both oral and injectable forms; the injectable form being commonly known as Winstrol Depot. While there are other steroids that can be found in both injectable and oral forms Stanozolol is one of the few that works equally well in either form; further, the injectable Winstrol Depot can be taken orally just as the standard oral tablet form. By its ease and convenience of administration, coupled with more hype surrounding the steroid than any other form Stanozolol remains one of the most popular steroids of all time.

Adverse Effects

All medications, steroidal and non-steroidal alike carry with them possible negative and adverse side-effects, in that Stanozolol makes no exception. It is important to note, such side-effects are by no means guaranteed and when speaking of anabolic steroids such effects are often largely avoidable through responsible use. Many anabolic steroids can have a negative effect on one’s cholesterol and often this problem is avoidable by proper diet and even through aromatase inhibitor use as cholesterol issues are often estrogenic related. However, Stanozolol has a very pronounced negative effect on cholesterol and for this reason use must necessarily be kept brief and in responsible levels.

Stanozolol can also increase liver enzymes quite heavily, especially when taken in tablet form, as oral Stanozolol is a 17-aa steroid. However, most will find their liver values return to normal after use is discontinued and the liver will not be harmed. Even still, responsible use must be implored but understand, even massive doses of Stanozolol are not as damaging to the liver as every day alcohol consumption.

Optimal Stanozolol Use

While Stanozolol is a strong anabolic with a low androgenic nature it is far from the most powerful anabolic available but far from the weakest as well. Without question the attributes of this anabolic steroid are best seen during a cutting cycle as Stanozolol will provide a harder more vascular look to an already lean physique. However, the benefits do not end with hardening; Stanozolol by its nature is well-suited for increasing strength, even when dieting which can normally be very difficult; no, one will not gain massive strength when dieting but it can go up a little; especially in the early stages. By its strength attributes Stanozolol remains a favorite for many athletes in a host of various performance sports.

While an excellent steroid to use when dieting Stanozolol will not do a lot for you when trying to bulk up in-terms of actual growth. It can have a place in a bulking cycle for secondary purposes but most will stick with powerful steroids with strong androgenic qualities for this purpose. Nevertheless, whenever the steroid is used it is important to note it will suppress natural testosterone production to a degree and most men will necessarily supplement with some form of exogenous testosterone. While it will suppress natural production it will not do so to the extent of many other steroids but still enough to warrant caution and remedy.

Stanozolol Administration

As both injectable and oral forms will produce the same results, administration in-terms of frequency will follow suit and be identical regardless of the form at hand. As injections can be very painful with this steroid due to the Depot version being suspended in water many choose to simply drink it or take oral tabs; regardless of the form every day administration will prove to be optimal. However, every other day administration will yield positive results as the half-life extends to 24 hours but most will find every day administration to be the most efficient.

To get the most bang for your buck most men will find 50mg of Stanozolol to be just about perfect with 100mg being about as high as you’d ever want to go. 100mg per day is very common in competitive bodybuilding circles but generally only the last 7-10 days before the competition as that high of a dose for long periods can be very side-effect ridden. In most cases, 50mg per day for approximately 6-8 weeks will prove to be fantastic.

For our female athletes, 5mg-10mg is perfect and most are highly cautioned against going above this dose and staying within the 6-8 weeks of total use. Failure to abide will result in nasty virilization effects; even though it is only slightly androgenic it’s still androgenic in nature. When used responsibly most women will find Stanozolol to be very well-tolerated.

Steroid Side Effects

Oral and injected corticosteroids (or simply “steroids”) are medications used to treat inflammation in the body. When taken in oral or injected forms, the route of administration is termed “systemic.” These medicines are used to treat a wide variety of diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other autoimmune diseases. Systemic steroids are also used to treat asthma attacks, and on occasion, severe allergic rhinitis symptoms.

When people think about the side effects of steroids, they usually mean the side effects of systemic steroids. While systemic steroids are often necessary and life-saving medicines needed to treat inflammation, they don’t come without side effects. Most side effects are from short-term use; however, long-term use can lead to additional side effects.

Most people receive systemic steroids for only a few days at a time, and experience only temporary side effects. These may include an increase in appetite, difficulty sleeping (insomnia), changes in mood and behavior, flushing (redness) of the face, and short-term weight gain due to increased water retention. These side effects usually resolve after a few days once the steroids have been stopped.
People with underlying medical conditions might also notice other side effects. Those with diabetes mellitus may see an increase in their blood sugar readings; those with high blood pressure may see their blood pressure readings rise. People with glaucoma could have an increase of the pressures within their eyes; people with congestive heart failure may retain water and have worsening of this condition. For this reason, a person with any chronic underlying disease should be closely followed by their physician while taking systemic steroids.

Long-Term Side Effects of Systemic Steroids

When systemic steroids are used for long periods of time, or when steroids are taken on multiple occasions, more serious side effects may occur. It is for these reasons that the dose and duration of systemic steroids should be minimized whenever possible. Some of  Anabolic Steroids can be decreased by taking systemic steroids every other day instead of daily, even if the total dose is the same. Many of the side effects are reversible if the steroids are stopped, while other side effects may be permanent.

Side effects of long-term steroid use includes:

  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • High-blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Obesity
  • Acid reflux/GERD
  • Osteoporosis
  • Myopathy
  • Increase in certain types of infections
  • Cushing syndrome

People taking long-term systemic steroids should be closely monitored for the above diseases, and should take medicines to prevent osteoporosis. These medicines may include supplemental calcium and vitamin D, along with medicines to prevent bone loss called bisphosphonates. Frequent measuring of bone-mineral density should also be performed in people taking long-term systemic steroids.

Walmart Launches Free Layaway

In front of 6,000 Walmart associates at Walmart’s annual holiday meeting Wednesday, chief merchandising and marketing officer Duncan Mac Naughton introduced free layaway with no opening fee. Beginning Sept. 13 through Dec. 13, layaway will kick off the retailer’s official start to the holiday season.

“Times are tough and it’s not easy for many Americans – they are watching every penny,” said Mac Naughton. “All year long, but especially during the holidays, our customers need a low price leader. This year, we are committed to doing everything we did last year to help Americans save money – plus more. More savings, more layaway items and our commitment that they can give their families a great Christmas on a budget.”

Walmart’s free layaway means no opening fees, no gift-card reimbursements, just free. Eligible layaway items include electronics, toys, jewelry, small appliances and select sporting goods. And new in 2013 are infant toys and automotive electronics such as speakers and stereos.

Walmart’s layaway will once again help customers purchase the newest electronics from the brands they know and love like Apple, Google, Samsung, Sony and more. A few of the top electronics the retailer expects to be popular layaway gifts include:

  1. Tablets such as the iPad, iPad Mini, Samsung Galaxy and Google Nexus
  2. Smartphones like the iPhone 5 or Samsung Galaxy 3 (prepaid only)
  3. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles and new releases
  4. Big screen (60”+) smart TVs

Walmart also expects toys to be popular for layaway, including:

  • Furby Boom
  • Barbie Dream House
  • Big Hugs Elmo
  • Zoomer, a robotic dog
  • Bikes and ride-on vehicles
  • Children’s tablets and learning toys such as LeapFrog

Using layaway at Walmart is simple. Customers can start a layaway account in any Walmart Supercenter or Walmart store (not including Neighborhood Markets) by visiting the Walmart.com Services Desk. Once a layaway account is opened, customers can make payments at any register in that store between Sept. 13 and Dec. 13, 2013. Walmart will also send payment reminders and status updates to customers via email.

In addition, for added convenience in purchasing select large items, including ride-on vehicles, basketball goals and trampolines, Walmart is introducing new “tear pad” slips that customers can bring to the Walmart.com Services Desk – alleviating the need to carry select bulky items to the counter.

Walmart Foundation Contributes 53-foot Semitrailer Truck to Community Harvest Food Bank

Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana can now move four times the amount of fresh produce and other food to families in need, thanks to a $75,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation. The grant allowed Community Harvest Food Bank to buy a 53-foot refrigerated semitrailer and tractor.

"We are so grateful to the Walmart Foundation because this one truck will help us collect and deliver food far more efficiently," Executive Director Jane Avery said. "Our old box truck could handle only 12 pallets of food, but the new refrigerated truck has the capacity to move 53 pallets."

In the past, Avery said, the food bank would get an offer for fresh produce such as lettuce, carrots, peaches or tomatoes. Because they didn't have a way to safely transport perishables, the offer would have to be turned down. "Sometimes we could hire an outside vendor, but that gets expensive, too." She pointed out it cost the food bank more than $500 to accept a delivery of donated milk from Indianapolis earlier this year.

"Walmart understands how improving logistics means helping more people. We bring millions of products to store shelves every year with one of the most efficient logistics systems in the world," said John Wolf, Walmart market manager and former Community Harvest Food Bank president. "We are honored to see the Walmart Foundation present this grant to the Community Harvest Food Bank and know it will help families who really need assistance."

In 2010, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation launched "Fighting Hunger Together" – a $2 billion cash and in-kind commitment through 2015 to fight hunger in America. This initiative leverages Walmart's size and resources to provide nutritious food and the Walmart Foundation's ability to grant funding to nonprofits that help elevate the issue. In 2012, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation became the first partners of Feeding America to surpass 1 billion meals donated.

A 2010 study conducted by Feeding America shows how people in Indiana have to make difficult eating decisions:

  • 46 percent of clients in Indiana report having to choose between paying for food and paying for utilities or heating fuel.

Health Care Without the Doctors Coming to a Walmart Near You

Perched by a computer monitor wedged between shelves of cough drops and the pharmacy in a bustling Walmart, Mohamed Khader taps out answers to questions such as how often he eats vegetables, whether anyone in his family has diabetes and his age. He tests his eyesight, weighs himself and checks his blood pressure as a middle-aged couple watches at the blue-and-white SoloHealth station advertising "free health screenings."

"You may not go to the doctor every year, but you come to Walmart often," says the fit-looking 43-year-old Khader who lives in nearby Ashburn, Va. "I get bored while my wife is shopping. This is a time killer. I'll come back in two months or so, and track my results." A burgeoning consumer health industry is betting that millions of consumers will do just that.

As Americans gain coverage under the federal health law, putting increased demand on primary care doctors and spurring interest in cheaper, more convenient care, unmanned kiosks like these may be part of what their manufacturer bills as a "self-service healthcare revolution."

From SoloHealth's stations, slated to be in 2,500 Walmarts and Sam's Clubs next month, to video consultations with doctors, to smartphone apps that track blood pressure and heart rate, consumer health technology is attracting big-name backers such as retailer Walmart, health insurers Wellpoint and UnitedHealthcare and companies that make or distribute medical products, such as Johnson & Johnson and Cardinal Health.

Walmart's interest is especially significant, given the giant retailer's reach, the growth of its pharmacies and retail medical clinics and a top official's recent statements -- since walked back by the company -- outlining plans for a push into primary care.

Some doctors' groups and consumer advocates urge caution, raising concerns about how companies might use personal health data, the quality of their medical information and whether advertisers and other sponsors might shape their advice and referrals for commercial reasons.

"There is a trend in general by retailers and health insurers to provide 'fluff' to consumers in the guise of real medical information as an advertising delivery device," says Carmen Balber of the left-leaning advocacy group Consumer Watchdog.

Bringing Exam Rooms To Patients

Walmart spokeswoman Danit Marquardt says the placement of SoloHealth stations in many stores is part of the retailer's commitment to "testing new products and services and ways to keep customers healthy."

"We don't have a larger plan for primary care at this time," she added.

But SoloHealth's backers do have larger plans. The Duluth, Ga.-based company aims to expand its kiosk offerings to teach people how to quit smoking, test whether they are at risk for diabetes and even enroll them in health coverage.

Self-serve computer stations are also eyed as a way to help consumers figure out whether they need medications for conditions such as high cholesterol, under a proposal now before the FDA to make some prescription medications over-the-counter. "It is clear there are now many interactive mechanisms that can step the consumer through the process of self-diagnosis and medication selection," said Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at a public hearing last March. The proposal is still under review.

Rival firms are marketing similar technologies. Dublin-Ohio based HealthSpot has enclosed cubicles that allow patients to pay $59 to $79 for a video "visit" with a doctor. NowClinic online, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, provides 10-minute video chats with physicians for $45.

Technology "has become a new arm of the health care delivery system," says Jay Sanders, an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University and CEO of The Global Telemedicine Group, a consulting firm in McLean, Va. "You need to bring the exam room to where the patient is, not where the doctor is."

'Treading A Fine Line'

SoloHealth's founder and CEO Bart Foster saw larger possibilities for automated screening after he began providing Walmart with self-service vision tests as a way to get shoppers from the product aisles to Walmart's optical shops.

In 2010, the firm got a $1.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop new approaches to screening for people in underserved communities. It has also received more than $43 million in investments from computer maker Dell Corp., health insurer WellPoint and Coinstar, maker of the Red Box DVD rental boxes, he says.

Today, SoloHealth's kiosks, which are not connected to a live physician, allow consumers not just to test their eyesight and learn if they are obese, but to get information on diet, vitamins and pain management. A "find a doctor" function can direct users to nearby doctors, although the one in Sterling listed only "optical doctors" -- and those appeared mainly to be Walmart-affiliated.

Foster says SoloHealth has received lists of doctors from sponsors, including Walmart, and also allows doctors to buy a listing. SoloHealth does not do any independent review of doctors' credentials. About 20 to 30 doctors are typically offered.

Among its programs is one that advises those suffering symptoms of heartburn whether it may indeed be heartburn and which over-the-counter product might be useful, says Stephen Kendig, the firm's chief commercial officer.

"We're treading a fine line," Foster says. "We don't want to practice medicine, just educate people."

But such programs raise a red flag for some consumer advocates who worry the "advice" might be an advertisement.

The SoloHealth station in Sterling, Va., for example, runs a video for Healthy Choice yogurt while the blood pressure device inflates. Ads for Nature Made fish oil supplements or Healthy Choice frozen meals appear when consumers respond yes to a written question asking if they want more information about a healthy lifestyle. Others appear for allergy drug Zyrtec and heartburn medication Prilosec.

The ads, which can be targeted to particular consumers based on their answers, are SoloHealth's revenue model. "Reach customers when they are aisles, not miles, away," the firm's message to advertisers on its website says.

Users who enter their email addresses -- and about 18 percent do -- will receive test results, along with information that might include "ask your doctor about this drug" or "pick up some Advil on aisle four," says Foster. Despite those efforts, every one of the five people who used the kiosk in the space of about an hour, including Khader, said they did not notice the advertising.

Privacy Risk?

Consumers Union Senior Attorney Mark Savage says it's a good thing to get people more engaged in their health, but he says the new technology carries potential risks.

"You have a situation where a patient is voluntarily disclosing information, which means there is no privacy protection, generally," Savage says. "They may not know if the information is being kept and might be used weeks or years after."

SoloHealth's Kendig says the firm is not considered a covered entity under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, meaning it is not required to meet the law's privacy standards. If it shares personal health information with insurers or medical providers, then it would need to meet those standards.

All information, except the email addresses, is aggregated and shared with SoloHealth sponsors without personal identifiers, Foster says. Those who leave their email address can track their test results over time and may be sent more information, including newsletters targeted to specific health conditions.

Consumer Khader did not mention concerns about how his information might be stored and used in the future. But he did have one suggestion. Turn the machines so the screen cannot be seen by other customers.

"I would like a little more privacy," he says.

Walmart Announces 10 New Solar Installations In Maryland

Walmart and SolarCity today announced the completion of projects at eight Walmart stores and two Sam’s Clubs across the state of Maryland that will generate clean, renewable electricity. The energy produced by the new solar installations will generate approximately 4.1 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity annually – enough energy to power nearly 370 homes – and are expected to supply between 5-20 percent of each store’s overall electricity use.

"In Maryland, we've set some of the most ambitious goals in the nation for advancing clean renewable energy and creating green jobs," said Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley. "We're helping businesses take advantage of solar incentives so they can save money while embracing the job-creating, planet-saving potential of our green economy. I commend the partnership between SolarCity and Walmart as a significant step forward toward a more sustainable future for generations to come."

“Building a clean energy economy creates new jobs and provides affordable, reliable clean energy choices for businesses,” said Abigail Ross Hopper, director of the Maryland Energy Administration. “The partnership between SolarCity and Walmart shows that we’re taking the right steps.”

With over 13,400 panels, the Walmart stores in Arbutus, Berlin, California, Cockeysville, Fallston, Hagerstown, Laurel and Severn, along with Sam’s Clubs in Salisbury and Severn will provide over 3.1 megawatts (MW) of generation capacity.

“Walmart is a leader in clean energy here in Maryland and across the country,” said SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive. “Walmart is setting an example for companies in Maryland to follow; it’s possible for many Maryland businesses to pay less for solar power than they currently pay for electricity.”

This new series of solar systems in Maryland bring the total number of Walmart and Sam’s Club locations with SolarCity installations to almost 150 across multiple states with additional locations in the works. Last year, SolarCity installed Walmart’s largest solar-power system at its distribution center in Buckeye, Ariz.

“Solar power makes sense for Walmart, and it makes sense for Maryland,” said David Ozment, Walmart’s senior director of energy. “We are committed to increasing the use of renewable energy, including solar panels, at our stores in Maryland and throughout the country.”

In total, Walmart generates more than 1 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity around the world annually. It also has more than 300 renewable energy projects in operation or under development globally. With a goal to be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy, the company is ranked by the United States' Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ‘Green Power Partnership’ program as the largest on-site green power generator in the U.S. Last year, the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) ranked Walmart the number one retailer to use solar power in the U.S. Solar energy will continue to play a critical role in Walmart’s renewable energy portfolio and the company aims to install solar on at least 1,000 stores in the U.S. by 2020.

Walmart and Dress for Success Worldwide Are “Paving the Way Forward” for the Disadvantaged Women of the United States

NEW YORK, NY (June 18, 2013):  New grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are “Paving the Way Forward” for Dress for Success Worldwide to help the organization better assist women across the United States along their path to self-sufficiency and economic independence. The $500,000 in grants will be distributed among 15 Dress for Success affiliates to either establish or enhance their Career Centers, the dedicated workspaces located at the primary suiting location where Dress for Success clients receive career guidance. This new initiative was announced today in a special ceremony at the Walmart Northwest Arkansas LPGA Championship.

Dress for Success is popularly known for providing professional attire to women-in-need for job interviews, but the organization addresses every phase of a woman’s career—from being unemployed and searching, to recently employed and adjusting, to gainfully employed and succeeding.  It is the career development and employment retention programs and services that are the cornerstone of Dress for Success, which each woman experiences in the Career Center the very first day she walks through the doors of the nonprofit.

These grants to Dress for Success support the goals of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s Global Women’s Economic Empowerment Initiative, one of which is to help 200,000 U.S. women from low-income households gain access to job training, education, career counseling, and mentoring to increase their employment opportunities. More information on this initiative can be found at corporate.walmart.com/women.

Paving the Way Forward will increase efficiencies within, and develop the long-term sustainability of, the Career Center services through a three-pronged approach:

Acquire, Improve, Update. This capacity-building program will enable Dress for Success affiliates to make any necessary improvements to their Career Centers, such as acquiring the appropriate tools and physical resources to ensure that its Career Center is running at optimum ability, such as computers, printers and software-or even designating a physical space for those affiliates who are in the process of establishing a Career Center.
Increase Womanpower Hours. Affiliates will be able to increase the hours of current part-time staff members or to engage the services of a consultant. This will help to provide a structured learning environment for Dress for Success clients hoping to conduct self-directed job searches; receive one-on-one support drafting résumés and cover letters; practice interview skills; and access online professional skills training courses. With this additional staffing, the Career Center will be able to implement two workshops selected from the Going Places Network by Walmart curriculum.
Leadership Lessons. Paving the Way Forward will support new affiliates attending our annual Affiliate Leadership Conference.  The lessons learned during this three day workshop retreat will assist the leaders to more effectively and efficiently serve the women of their respective communities.
This $500,000 in new grants comes on the heels of a $2.5 million award that the Walmart Foundation given to Dress for Success earlier this year in support the organization’s “Going Places Network by Walmart” (GPN).  The GPN funding supports six 12-week sessions of the program over the next two years at 60 Dress for Success affiliates.  This specially-designed program helps unemployed and underemployed Dress for Success clients gain professional skills, accelerate their job searches and build confidence through weekly training sessions, one-on-one career coaching and networking in a supportive environment.  The GPN launched in 2011 as a result of an initial $2 million grant from the Walmart Foundation. To date, 4,500 women have completed the GPN nationally, with about 41 percent of the women securing employment upon completion of the 12-week program.

“Our suiting program helps every Dress for Success woman look the part for job interview, but our Career Centers help her become the part,” said Joi Gordon, CEO of Dress for Success Worldwide.  “With the support of the Walmart Foundation, ‘Paving the Way Forward’ will allow us to assist even more women become confident professionals.”

“The Walmart Foundation is pleased to expand our support of Career Centers at Dress for Success,” said Crosby Cromwell, Senior Manager, Walmart Foundation. “These centers help women build the confidence to succeed in their careers and in life, which is at the cornerstone of Walmart’s efforts in Women’s Economic Empowerment.”

In addition to Paving the Way Forward and the GPN, Walmart has a longstanding history with Dress for Success Worldwide.  The retailer has supported Dress for Success Worldwide with in-kind donations of clothing, volunteer projects and event sponsorships. In response to the organization’s need for plus-size clothing, Walmart manufactured and donated thousands of plus-size suits under the George label for Dress for Success. The company has also supported the Success Summit, the leadership conference for Dress for Success clients who are members of the organization’s Professional Women’s Group. Fifty of Walmart’s senior female executives have also worked with Dress for Success clients participating in the Success Summit for eight months of one-on-one coaching as part of the Leader to LeadHER program.

American Red Cross and Walmart Offer Nurse Assistant Training

The American Red Cross will help 2,500 students receive training for entry-level healthcare careers through the Red Cross Nurse Assistant Training (NAT) program thanks to a $3.5 million grant from the Walmart Foundation. The program equips students and helps give them a career pathway into the fast-growing industry, while also helping communities alleviate a shortage of adequately trained Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs).
The $3.5 million grant for the training, which primarily will help women below the poverty line, is the first credential-specific training grant Walmart has awarded as part of their Global Women's Economic Empowerment Initiative.
“Walmart is making it possible for so many who have the desire and aptitude to work in the healthcare field to get a solid foundation and a head start through our Nurse Assistant Training,” said Joseph Alfonso, Senior National Director, Nurse Assistant Training Operations, American Red Cross.  “As many as 10 times the number of annual graduates from our program would like to take the course but cannot afford to do so.”

The Red Cross training program supports the goals of Walmart’s Global Women’s Economic Empowerment Initiative, one of which is to help 200,000 U.S. women from low-income households access job training, education, career counseling, and mentoring to increase their employment opportunities.

Walmart Launches Veterans Commitment and Plans.

At May 27, 2013 - Walmart launched the Veterans Welcome Home Commitment to offer a job to any honorably discharged veteran within his or her first 12 months off active duty, and projects to hire more than 100,000 veterans over the next five years.
“Hiring a veteran can be one of the best business decisions you make,” said Bill Simon, Walmart U.S. president and CEO and US Navy Veteran. “We believe Walmart is already the largest private employer of veterans in the country, and we want to hire more.”

“Veterans have a record of performance under pressure. They’re quick learners and team players and are leaders with discipline, training and a passion for service,” Simon continued. “I can think of no better group to lead in revitalizing our economy than those who have served in uniform. Through their service, veterans give us a land of freedom. When they return, it must be to a land of possibility.”

In April, Walmart participated in the Joining Forces Employment Announcement at the White House, and challenged companies to hire 100,000 veterans and their spouses by the end of 2013. To move this effort forward, Simon wrote to 50 CEOs in the U.S. to urge them to make hiring commitments of their own.

“Every company in America has benefited from the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform,” said Simon. “The biggest issue facing our veterans today is jobs. Sadly, too many of those who fought for us abroad now find themselves fighting for jobs at home.”

The company’s focus on supporting veterans extends beyond its hiring initiative. The Walmart Foundation has committed $20 million through 2015 to helping veterans and their families transition from the military into the civilian workforce through programs that provide job training, transition support and education.

Walmart Helps to Conserve Open Spaces in Seven States

Walmart’s Acres for America program, a conservation partnership with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), is protecting priority lands across the country to provide wildlife habitats and recreational opportunities for local residents. Newly-announced projects in Arkansas, New Mexico, Nebraska, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Maine and Oregon are part of an ongoing program to conserve the nation’s most precious lands and natural resources to benefit people, wildlife and local economies.

Since 2005, Walmart has worked with NFWF to establish Acres for America, a 10-year, $35 million commitment to purchase and preserve one acre of wildlife habitat in the U.S. for every acre of land developed by the company. The program has protected critical habitats for birds, fish, plants and wildlife and far surpassed its original goals, becoming one of the country’s most effective conservation partnerships. To date, Acres for America has invested in projects in 30 states and the District of Columbia.
New Acres for America projects include the following:

Devil’s Eyebrow Preserve: Benton County, Arkansas
Partners: The Nature Conservancy and Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission
The Devil’s Eyebrow Preserve on Beaver Lake, Arkansas, is a 1,950-acre lakefront parcel that harbors a rich diversity of wildlife and plants native to the Ozark region. In addition to 12 different varieties of hardwood trees, it contains several live springs, underground caves and aquifers.

Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge: Albuquerque, New Mexico
Partners: Trust for Public Land
The new Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico is part of Acres for America’s urban component. The 390-acre acquisition will protect and restore priority wildlife habitat for sandhill cranes and other wildlife. Just five miles south of Albuquerque, the property along the Rio Grande will form the basis for the new Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge.

Audubon’s Rowe Sanctuary: Platte River, Nebraska
Partners: National Audubon Society
In Nebraska, a 577-acre addition to an existing wildlife refuge will support the largest population of sandhill cranes (more than 100,000) and other birds in the Central Platte River Valley during spring migration.

Brule–St. Croix Legacy Forest: Northwestern Wisconsin
Partners: The Conservation Fund and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
A new Acres project in northwestern Wisconsin will protect 1,477 acres of globally significant pine barrens. The parcel is the capstone of the largest conservation project in Wisconsin history.

White Mountains to Moosehead Lake Initiative: New Hampshire and Western Maine
Partners: The Trust for Public Land
A combination of three transactions in New Hampshire and western Maine will permanently protect 49,227 acres of critical forest, lakes, streams and wetlands habitat.

Headwaters of the John Day: Central Oregon
Partners: Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation
In Oregon, 13,073 acres of timberland adjacent to the Malheur National Forest will preserve over 35 miles of critical habitat for Chinook salmon and other species and help maintain an important wildlife corridor.

Cialis (Tadalafil)

Tadalafil is used to treat male sexual function problems (impotence or erectile dysfunction-ED). In combination with sexual stimulation, tadalafil works by increasing blood flow to the penis to help a man get and keep an erection.

Tadalafil is also used to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia-BPH). It helps to relieve symptoms of BPH such as difficulty in beginning the flow of urine, weak stream, and the need to urinate frequently or urgently (including during the middle of the night). Tadalafil is thought to work by relaxing the smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder.

This drug does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, hepatitis B, gonorrhea, syphilis). Practice "safe sex" such as using latex condoms. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

The dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. Be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

To treat the symptoms of BPH, take this medication as directed by your doctor, usually once a day.

To treat erectile dysfunction-ED, there are 2 ways that tadalafil may be prescribed. Your doctor will determine which is the best way for you to take tadalafil. Follow your doctor's directions exactly since your dosage depends on how you are taking it. The first way is to take it as needed, usually at least 30 minutes before sexual activity. Tadalafil's effect on sexual ability may last up to 36 hours.

The second way to treat ED is to take tadalafil regularly, once a day every day. If you take it this way, you may attempt sexual activity at any time between your doses.

If you are taking tadalafil to treat both ED and BPH, take it as directed by your doctor, usually once a day. You may attempt sexual activity at any time between your doses.

If you are taking tadalafil once daily for BPH, or for ED, or for both, take it regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day.

Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while using this medication unless your doctor or pharmacist says you may do so safely. Grapefruit can increase the chance of side effects with this medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.

“With our smaller format, our store is perfect for those on the go,” said Lakeview Store Manager Eric Galle, who began his Walmart career in 2001 as a cart pusher at the retailer’s Joliet store. “Whether they’re stocking up or need to pick up just a few items, our customers will be able to find what they need quickly and easily. Consumers will be able to find familiar brands and local products at great values, right in their own neighborhood.”

Eric Jones, who began his Walmart career 12 years ago as an assistant manager in Orland Hills, will manage Back of the Yards and Fabian Lehaney will oversee Little Village.  Mr. Lehaney has been with Walmart since 1996 and started in the company’s Elk Grove Village store.
“Eric, Fabian and Eric are examples of the career opportunities available at Walmart as well as our ability to retain talented people,” said Labeed Diab, Senior Vice President, Walmart U.S. “Three quarters of our store management teams across the country started as hourly associates and more than 250,000 associates have been with the company for more than 10 years - these three individuals are a living representation of those statistics. I couldn’t be more proud of their success and look forward to watching them deliver for our Chicago customers.”
