WalMart Earnings beat expectations

WalMart Stores Inc. said it's still pulling shoppers away from its main rivals and enjoying a rise in customer traffic as the world's largest retailer released better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings Tuesday.

Still, WalMart is hardly immune from economic pressures. It issued a cautious earnings outlook as it feels the pinch from the stronger dollar in its international business, a trend officials said could hurt profits over the next three quarters.

Profit fell 7.4 percent to $3.79 billion, or 96 cents per share, in the quarter ended Jan. 31, dragged down by the strengthening dollar and a charge from settling labor lawsuits. That compares with $4.096 billion, or $1.02 per share, a year earlier.

Analysts expected 99 cents per share, excluding the after-tax charge for the settlement announced in December of 63 class-action wage and hour lawsuits. Excluding that, Wal-Mart earned $1.03 per share, which beat Wall Street estimates.

Total sales rose to $109.12 billion from $107.34 billion. Sales at stores open at least a year, a key indicator of a retailer's health, rose 2.8 percent in the quarter.

WalMart's U.S. sales rose 6 percent during the quarter, while business at its Sam's Club warehouse division was flat. Sales fell 8.4 percent at the international division, hurt by the lower value of currencies against the dollar.

Walmart Steps Up Efforts to Help Americans Manage Their Finances with $3 Rollback Price on Key Money Service

Feb. 18, 2009 – With more and more families facing financial challenges, Walmart today is stepping up efforts to provide affordable access to essential money services for the growing number of undeserved Americans, including the millions who are not using traditional checking accounts to manage their finances. Dubbed “Operation Main Street: Money Management,” the program includes a $3 Rollback price on the Walmart MoneyCard and a focus on financial literacy.

Combined, Walmart expects this effort – and its everyday low prices on money services like check cashing, bill payment and money transfers – to help consumers stretch family budgets and save more than $500 million* in money service fees this year.

“Now more than ever, our customers continue to trust Walmart to do what we do best – save them money on the products and services they need everyday,” said Eduardo Castro-Wright, vice chairman, Walmart Stores. “Financial issues are the number one concern for our customers, and accelerating our efforts to provide affordable financial services will help them live better.”

Even More Affordable Money Services
Beginning today, Walmart will offer the Walmart MoneyCard, a reloadable, pre-paid Visa debit card, for only $3. Reduced from nearly $9, the new $3 purchase price will provide the more than 35 million** American families underserved by traditional financial institutions many of the advantages of a checking account, including depositing their paychecks on a safe and secure card, checking their balances, paying bills and shopping anywhere Visa debit is accepted. The Walmart MoneyCard is now expected to save customers $50 million annually compared to similar cards. In addition, the card has no overdraft fees.

“Customers who use the Walmart Money Card tell us that we’re making a difference in their lives and helping them get their finances under control. The reduced fees on the Walmart MoneyCard will save our customers millions of dollars,” said Jane Thompson, president, Walmart Financial Services. “We will continue to lower prices on the money services that we know our customers need.”

Focus on Financial Literacy
Declaring today national “Money Management Day,” Walmart is working with Visa to make financial literacy tools available to customers nationwide. Available at www.walmartstores.com/money management, Visa’s Practical Money Skills for Life is a comprehensive program designed to help consumers manage their money wisely.

“Today, more than ever, Americans want to stay in control of their daily finances, and reloadable prepaid cards – like the Walmart MoneyCard – can help people better manage their money and spend within their means,” said Bill Sheedy, president, North America, Visa Inc. “Together, the built-in budgeting capabilities of Visa prepaid cards, Rollback pricing and easy access to our free financial management tools will be especially valuable in helping consumers.”

In addition, Walmart is bringing financial experts to select stores to provide expert advice and give customers the tools they need to manage their money. Best-selling author of Girl, Get Your Money Straight!, Glinda Bridgforth, and Univision’s financial expert, Julie Stav will meet with customers in Walmart MoneyCenters in Atlanta and Houston respectively to showcase their top money management tips.

“For those living from paycheck-to-paycheck, affordable access to basic money services like check-cashing, money transfers and reloadable pre-paid debit cards can be key to getting back on track and having finances that are in order,” said Bridgforth. “Walmart is setting an example and demonstrating how businesses can support – and help – Americans facing financial challenges.”

Associate Support
Walmart will also begin offering its 1.4 million U.S. associates a special associate value. Associates will receive a credit of the initial $3 purchase fee for the Walmart MoneyCard, no monthly fee, and free direct deposit reloads when they sign up for Walmart direct deposit. The company expects this new offering to make managing finances easier for associates who do not use a bank account. Walmart already waives the fee for the hundreds of thousands of paper checks it cashes for its associates every payday.

The Walmart MoneyCard Advantage
Available for customers without requiring a credit check or previous bank account, the Walmart MoneyCard is a convenient, safe alternative to carrying cash, having a checking account or charging a credit card. Because it is a pre-funded card, customers spend only what they have and cannot be hurt by unexpected overdraft or late fees. In fact, those choosing to replace their basic checking account with a Walmart MoneyCard would avoid overdraft and insufficient funds fees, which reached over $24 billion in the U.S. in 2008.**

Under the new $3 pricing structure, customers will pay a one-time cost of $3 to purchase and activate the Walmart MoneyCard, a $3 charge for reloads at Walmart, and a $3 monthly fee. Even better, many Walmart MoneyCard customers use their card in ways that minimize fees. For example:

* If customers reload with direct deposit or after cashing their paychecks at Walmart, there is no reload fee.
* If customers load at least $1,000 per month, there is no monthly fee.
* If customers access cash back at the register instead of ATM’s, there is no withdrawal fee.

The Walmart MoneyCard is accepted at approximately 29 million Visa merchant locations worldwide and can be reloaded at tens of thousands of Green Dot retailer locations. In addition, the Walmart MoneyCard helps customers manage their spending with free daily cell phone or email balance alerts, free balance inquiries at Walmart stores and online transaction history at www.walmartmoneycard.com.

Joint statement from WalMart and counsel for Plaintiffs regarding wage and hour class action case of Carter v. WalMart

Walterboro, South Carolina, February 17, 2009 - Colleton County, South Carolina, Judge Perry M. Buckner, III preliminarily approved the settlement of a wage and hour class action suit against Wal-Mart in South Carolina, a settlement that was earlier disclosed by the parties on December 23, 2008. The settlement, which will total up to $49,000,000, concludes more than six years of litigation concerning Wal-Mart’s employment practices in South Carolina. In addition, as part of the settlement, Wal-Mart has agreed to continue to maintain electronic systems, surveys, and notices that will protect the rights of workers.

“We are pleased with the preliminary approval of the settlement by the Court. We hope that WalMart’s industry leading compliance model will set an example for the retail industry” said class counsel Brad Hutto of the law firm of Williams & Williams in Orangeburg, counsel for the class.

“This lawsuit was filed years ago and the allegations are not representative of the company we are today,” said Daphne Moore, WalMart spokesperson. “Our policy is to pay associates for every hour worked and to make rest and meal breaks available. This is a commitment we make to the more than 1.4 million associates who choose to work for WalMart and serve our customers and members every day. We have worked hard to have the right communication, processes, and systems in place to help ensure we live up to this commitment.”

WalMart Holds Up In Sharp Recession, Beating EPS Views; Rare Winner: Shares Up 4%; Middle class now willing to shop at discount king for low prices

WalMart's value message rang loud and clear with thrifty shoppers in the fourth quarter, lifting the discount giant's earnings above Wall Street's views.

The world's biggest retailer earned $1.03 a share excluding nonrecurring items, about flat with a year ago and 4 cents above forecasts. Sales rose 2% to $109.12 billion, slightly below views.

WalMart shares jumped 4%, the only Dow component to buck Tuesday's sharp sell-off.

But even WalMart, which has been among retail's top performers the past year, isn't immune to the chilly spending climate. The quarter's sales gains were the weakest in years. Shares have been trading near a 52-week low.

The challenging economy has impacted everyone, including Wal-Mart customers, says Joe Feldman, retail analyst at Telsey Advisory Group.

"But it's holding up better than most other retailers," he said. "In fact, Wal-Mart is taking share in this environment."

WalMart had a strong close to the quarter, said new CEO Mike Duke in a conference call. But the stronger dollar hurt overseas sales.

The retail giant also took a 7-cents-a-share charge to settle class-action lawsuits.

Same-store sales rose 2.8% vs. a year ago, while most retailers suffered declines.

In the conference call, WalMart vice chairman Eduardo Castro-Wright said he believes the company's six merchandising units are outperforming leading rivals in each area on a comp basis.

Overall, analysts expect retailers' fourth-quarter profits to slide 23.2% vs. a year ago, says Ken Perkins, president of Retail Metrics.

WalMart has been a bright spot in today's dreary retail space as its low prices and broad array of food and other staples draw recession-ravaged consumers like a magnet.

"WalMart is clearly taking share," said analyst Bill Dreher of Deutsche Bank. "It's one of the only retailers to show a traffic increase over the last four months and in the fiscal year. Wal-Mart clearly has solid momentum."

January finished strong and February is off to a good start, Duke said.

In the latest quarter, WalMart maintained a tight grip on expenses and inventories, Dreher said.

At the same time, it generated strong free cash flow. It says it intends to resume buying back shares this quarter.

WalMart's strong value message resonates with consumers today, said analyst Wayne Hood of BMO Capital Markets.

"Now is the opportunity for WalMart to shine, and they're certainly doing that," he said.

Consumers are looking for basics at the prices WalMart offers, adds Feldman. And once in the stores, they are seeing a better environment, with cleaner stores and improved services, he said.

WalMart seems to be drawing a wider consumer base as middle-income people seek to be more frugal, added Dreher.

Wal-Mart pegs its full-year profit at $3.45-$3.60 a share. That assumes exchange rates stay where they were at year-end. That would hurt earnings by 13 cents.

It expects first-quarter same-store sales to rise 1%-3%.

"The (earnings) guidance for the quarter and the year are very doable, perhaps even conservative," said Dreher.

But Wal-Mart faces some foreign-exchange head winds in '09 through at least the first three quarters of the year, said Feldman.

It also will face pressure if macroeconomic conditions worsen, he says.

Children's Miracle Network, Wal-Mart Raise Awareness For Children's Hospitals with "Champions Across America"

Walmart stores, Sam’s Club associates, customers, members raised, contributed $460 million for CMN since 1987

SALT LAKE CITY (Feb. 18, 2009) — Children’s Miracle Network, an international non-profit that raises funds for 170 children’s hospitals in the United States, today announced support from Walmart and Sam’s Club for Champions Across America.

The Champions Across America program is designed to raise awareness of the vital work taking place in children’s hospitals. The 2009 program is officially known as Champions Across America presented by Walmart and Sam’s Club.

The retailer’s support for the Children’s Miracle Network began in 1987. Since then, Walmart and Sam’s Club associates, customers and members have raised and contributed more than $460 million for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.

The Champions Across America program designates in every state a Champion child who has bravely battled and triumphed despite a serious injury or illness. Champions serve as ambassadors for the 17 million children treated at Children’s Miracle Network hospitals each year. The 2009 Champions have dealt with a variety of hardships that include suffering from illnesses, such as brittle bone disease, brain tumors and cerebral palsy, and surviving car accidents and plane crashes.

“Children’s Miracle Network has been inspired for more than 20 years by the way Wal-Mart has rallied behind our cause all to benefit courageous children in their communities,” said Scott Burt, president and CEO, Children’s Miracle Network. “Wal-Mart understands that our fundraising empowers hospitals to improve health for children around the country, and essentially the world, by supporting important research and treatments. It is a privilege to work with them on Champions Across America, an initiative that deeply impacts the lives of everyone involved with the program.”

In March, Walmart and Sam’s Club will sponsor the Champions and their families as they travel to Walt Disney World and to Washington, D.C., where they will meet with their senators on Capitol Hill.

“Over the past two decades, Children’s Miracle Network, its hospitals and especially the children treated have found a very special place in the hearts of Walmart and Sam’s Club associates,” said Margaret McKenna, president of the Wal-Mart Foundation. “Our support for Champions Across America builds on the emotional connection our associates have with the children cared for by these hospitals.”

WalMart Statement on Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Order Granting Rehearing En Banc in Dukes Class Action Lawsui

"We are pleased with today's positive step in this case. We look forward to presenting our arguments to a larger group of judges and are hopeful they will decide the case should not proceed as a class action.

"It is important to note that the merits of this case have not been considered by the courts, and we believe the experiences alleged by the six individuals who brought this suit are not representative of the experiences of our female associates.

"Wal-Mart is a good place for women to work and fosters female leadership among our associates and in the larger business world."

“We’re creating good jobs and providing good benefits for our associates at all levels of the company, from part-time hourly associates to full-time managers,” said Eduardo Castro-Wright, vice chairman of WalMart Stores, Inc. “So, it’s gratifying that for the fifth year in a row the number of WalMart associates enrolled in the company’s health care plans has increased.”

Life with Baby provides free, personalized counseling and advice by a professional nurse through preconception, pregnancy, postpartum and early childhood development. WalMart also introduced several benefits innovations, including personalized health records (PHRs) to help associates keep track of their medical files and make more informed health care decisions.

“Since we began offering PHRs just a few months ago, more than 50,000 of our associates have signed up which we believe demonstrates that consumers are ready and willing to use technology to take control of their own health and wellness,” said Linda Dillman, executive vice president of benefits for WalMart Stores, Inc. “We hope that our government will study the many ways in which technology can be applied in considering health care reform for our nation this year.”

WalMart Foundation Teams Up with United Way and One Economy to Provide Free Tax Preparation and Filing Services

Foundation’s $3.6 Million Grant Expected to Increase Awareness of Earned Income Tax Credit, Has Potential to Return $345 Million in Total Tax Refunds and Preparation Fees

The WalMart Foundation today announced its commitment to bring free tax preparation and filing services to eligible taxpayers nationwide. Working with United Way and One Economy Corporation, a non-profit organization that helps low-income Americans enter the economic mainstream, the Foundation’s $3.6 million grant will launch the first-ever free mobile tax filing tour funded by a national retailer and fund more than 90 United Way-supported Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) campaigns.

The IRS estimates that approximately 20 percent of eligible individuals and families are unaware that they qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a refundable federal income tax credit for low-to moderate-income individuals and families. With the United Way-supported VITA campaigns, One Economy’s online tools and five Mobile Tax Center vans visiting communities throughout the country, the Wal-Mart Foundation’s grant has the potential to return $300 million* in EITC refunds and save $45 million** in tax preparation fees.

“This tax season, more Americans may be eligible for tax refunds due to the state of the economy and declining job market. That’s why we’re stepping up our efforts and bringing free tax filing access directly to the communities we serve,” said Margaret McKenna, president of the WalMart Foundation. “The WalMart Foundation strives to provide opportunities that improve the lives of individuals in our communities. That mission comes to life through this program, which is estimated to put millions in EITC refunds back in the pockets of eligible taxpayers.”

“The Earned Income Tax Credit is a proven work incentive and valuable tax benefit for millions of working American families, but there are still millions of eligible families who do not claim it,” said U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means. “I look forward to seeing the positive impact that this WalMart Foundation-funded program will have on our nation’s taxpayers, and commend United Way and One Economy for their efforts to educate working American families about the EITC and provide them with free tax preparation assistance.”

“This year more than ever, families need to take advantage of every dollar made available to them, and thanks to the WalMart Foundation, we are in a position to help them do just that,” said Brian Gallagher, president and CEO of United Way of America. “This grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation is sure to have a positive impact on families visiting VITA campaigns nationwide and will ultimately help to secure their long-term financial stability.”

“One Economy created an online tax filing platform to make it easier for low-income Americans to get the credits and refunds they deserve,” said Rey Ramsey, CEO of One Economy. “Now, thanks to the WalMart Foundation’s support, we’re able to do something truly innovative: take our digital tools and resources directly into the neighborhoods where they are needed most, while providing people with the knowledge and confidence to file online themselves.”

Second Wal-Mart planned for Elk Grove

The company plans to build a 100,000-square-foot store at Bruceville and Poppy Ridge roads in the proposed Vineyard at Madeira shopping center, Wal-Mart spokesman Aaron Rios told The Bee on Thursday.

The store will be open 24 hours a day and will include a fresh grocery section.

The Wal-Mart store at Elk Grove Boulevard and Highway 99 will remain open, according to Rios.

Construction on the new store can begin as soon as permits are obtained from the city, Rios said.

To proceed, Wal-Mart needs approval only by Elk Grove city staff members because the retail giant purchased a site previously approved for a 150,000-square-foot Target store, Rios said.

Wal-Mart must apply for a building permit and follow the conditions of approval set for Target, Councilman Steve Detrick said Thursday.

Detrick, who led a successful grass-roots fight against a proposed Wal-Mart in northeast Elk Grove before being elected to the City Council, said he doesn't have a problem with the new project.

"If you really look at it, combined (the two Elk Grove stores) are under 200,000 square feet," Detrick said. "The one at Sheldon and Power Inn was proposed for 250,000 square feet."

Detrick said he expects the construction of the Wal-Mart store to trigger a burst of building at the center.

"The other businesses that have signed on have been waiting for the major anchor," Detrick said.

Wal-Mart to put trucks to test Vehicles will run on natural gas, cooking grease or diesel-electric

WalMart Stores Inc. on Monday put a new spotlight on natural gas-powered vehicles - this time on trucks.

The world's largest retailer said it plans to test four models of heavy-duty commercial trucks powered by either hybrid engines or alternative fuels.

Test trucks operating out of a Southern California distribution center will use liquid natural gas, and others from a distribution center near Phoenix will be converted to run on waste cooking grease from WalMart stores.

Dallas; Houston; Atlanta; Apple Valley, Calif.; and the Washington-Baltimore operations will each test one diesel-electric hybrid truck.

WalMart, which operates one of the largest private truck fleets in the world, said the new trucks are part of its efforts to reduce its environmental footprint.

WalMart said it has surpassed a three-year goal in 2008 to make its fleet 25 percent more efficient. Now it plans to double its fleet efficiency by 2015 from its 2005 starting point.

The new technologies will be tested throughout this year.

Last November, T. Boone Pickens met with Lee Scott, then WalMart's chief executive, about converting the company's fleet of 7,200 trucks to natural gas.

Pickens, who owns part of a company that supplies natural gas to vehicles, has been pushing natural gas cars and buses since the early 1990s. More recently, he made it one of his key measures in a campaign to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil.

In addition to lobbying, the legendary oilman and hedge fund manager is footing the bill for a large television ad budget. He also is developing a wind farm.

Scott, who retired from the CEO post on Sunday but continues as chairman, started his career in WalMart's distribution and transportation operations. He led the company's green efforts and gained attention when the chain started selling millions of energy-efficient light bulbs.

WalMart was also one of the first retailers to building energy-efficient test stores, which are in McKinney and Colorado.

Last November, WalMart also said it would buy 15 percent of the electricity for Texas facilities from a Duke Energy wind farm.

will evaluate heavy-duty commercial trucks running on different types of alternative fuels.

Retailer set to test efficient trucks

WalMart Stores Inc., seeking to further reduce fuel consumption and emissions in its trucking fleet, said Monday that it would test two new hybrids and two alternative-fuel trucks this year, including trucks that use reclaimed cooking grease from its stores.

The company said it already has met its short-term goal of improving fuel efficiency in the fleet by 25 percent from 2005 to 2008. The longer-term goal is to double fuel efficiency by 2015 over the 2005 baseline.

WalMart's announcement came as bio diesel supporters opened the National Bio diesel Conference and Expo in San Francisco with a "Scientists for Bio diesel" declaration. Leaders of the organization wanted to make it clear that the push for bio-based fuels is about moving toward sustainable, renewable fuel sources, said Jessica Robinson, spokesman for the National Bio diesel Board based in Jefferson City, Mo.

The board says carbon dioxide emissions from bio diesel are 78 percent lower than those from petroleum diesel.

WalMart said 15 trucks at its Buckeye, Ariz., distribution facility will use reclaimed "brown" cooking grease - stuff that's caught in grease traps during cleaning. The rest of the trucks at the center will use a blend of diesel that incorporates "yellow" grease, the leftovers from French fries and other fried foods.

At a distribution center in Southern California, WalMart said four Peterbilt Model 386 trucks and one other vehicle will run on liquid natural gas.

Five others of the same model will use diesel-electric hybrid systems from Eaton Corp. and PACCAR Inc., a global technology company based in Bellevue, Wash.

Those trucks will be deployed in Dallas, Houston, Apple Valley, Calif., Atlanta, Washington and Baltimore.

And a diesel-electric hybrid developed for WalMart by Arvin Meritor Inc. of Troy, Mich., to be deployed in the Detroit area, is believed to be the first for a Class 8 (heavy) truck.

"We look forward to determining if these technologies will help reduce our environmental footprint, are viable for our business and provide a return on investment," Chris Sutlemeier, WalMart's senior vice president of transportation, said in a news release.

Wal-Mart Gets More Efficient

WalMart Stores (WMT:NYSE) has increased the efficiency of its trucking fleet more than 25% since beginning a company wide environmental campaign in 2005, the giant retailer announced Monday.

The company said in a news release that it cut its trucks' energy use by using new technologies, improving its delivery routes and loading its trailers more efficiently.

WalMart Foundation Donates $5.7 Million to Support the Creation of Green Jobs in the U.S.

Grants to the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Veterans Green Jobs Work to Support One of the Fastest Growing Sectors of Jobs in the Country

BENTONVILLE, Ark., February 3, 2009 – The WalMart Foundation announced today that it will award to the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Veterans Green Jobs grants totaling $5.7 million to support the creation of green jobs in the U.S. Today’s announcement comes on the heels of a newly released Global Insight study revealing that 10 percent of job growth in the U.S. is likely to be green by 2038, the fastest growing sector in the country.

“We understand how important building a green workforce is to the future of America, and the WalMart Foundation is committed to helping create job growth that also sustains our environment,” said Margaret McKenna, president of the WalMart Foundation. “Realizing that one of the greatest barriers to creating green jobs is the lack of a trained workforce, the Wal-Mart Foundation’s grants will help break through this barrier and enable more American workers to be trained and ready to contribute in this growing sector.

The WalMart Foundation’s $5 million grant to the U.S. Conference of Mayors will work to create jobs in an array of emerging green industries. In the spring of 2009, through a competitive selection process led by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, six grants will be awarded to non-profit organizations that have a history of working with mayors to train people for green jobs. In early 2010, three additional grants will be given to cities with newer commitments to providing green workforce training.

Additionally, the WalMart Foundation is awarding nearly $750,000 to Veterans Green Jobs to support the development of four training sites which will help veterans develop green job training skills. The training sites – which will be built in Washington, Colorado, New Mexico and Louisiana – will assist many of the nearly two million returned or returning military personnel facing the challenging task of reintegrating into civilian life.

This generous grant from the WalMart Foundation is enabling us to continue building a green workforce in cities nationwide,” said Manny Diaz, president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and mayor of Miami. “Given that 85 percent of all green jobs are expected to be located in cities and their metro areas in the coming years, this grant could not come at a better time.”

Veterans Green Jobs empowers vets to become leaders in the restoration of America's environment, economy and communities. We provide them with the finest education and training opportunities in fast-growing green jobs sectors," said Brett KenCairn, executive director of Veterans Green Jobs. “Veterans tell us repeatedly that being able to serve their country through meaningful, restorative work is the most healing thing they could experience post-combat. We appreciate the Wal-Mart Foundation for this generous donation, and are looking forward to seeing the positive impact that it will have on our nation’s service members."

WalMart Tests New Hybrid Trucks, Alternative Fuels

Company surpasses goal of 25 percent fleet efficiency gain in three years

Feb. 2, 2008, WalMart Stores, Inc. announced it will test two new types of heavy-duty commercial hybrid trucks and two different alternatively fueled heavy duty trucks as a part of the company’s efforts to build on its progress in developing a more sustainable trucking fleet.

The new trucks include:

* A full-propulsion Arvin Meritor hybrid that will initially operate in the Detroit area. This dual-mode diesel-electric hybrid is believed to be the first vehicle of its type;
* Fifteen trucks operating in Buckeye, Ariz. distribution center near Phoenix, will be converted to run on Reclaimed Grease Fuel TM, made with the waste brown cooking grease from Walmart stores. In addition, the remaining trucks located in the Buckeye distribution center will operate on an 80/20 blend of bio diesel made of reclaimed yellow waste grease;
* Five Peterbilt Model 386 heavy duty hybrid trucks with diesel-electric hybrid power systems developed by Eaton Corporation and PACCAR, that will be based in Dallas, Houston, Apple Valley, Calif., Atlanta and the Washington/Baltimore regions and;
* Four Peterbilt Model 386 trucks and one yard truck, which operates only on the distribution center property, will operate on liquid natural gas. These trucks are part of a partnership with the Mojave Air Quality Management District and will operate out of the distribution center in Southern California.

“In order to meet our goal of doubling our fleet efficiency, we are taking an active role in the development of these technologies,” said Chris Sultemeier, senior vice president of transportation for WalMart Stores, Inc. “We look forward to determining if these technologies will help reduce our environmental footprint, are viable for our business and provide a return on investment.”

WalMart achieved more than a 25 percent increase in efficiency within its private fleet between 2005 and 2008, surpassing one of the company’s stated sustainability goals. By reaching this goal, WalMart has been able to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions and its fuel use. This goal was reached by using a combination of new, innovative technologies, better delivery routes and by loading its trailers more efficiently. Now, the company is working toward its goal of doubling its fleet efficiency by 2015, from its 2005 baseline. Part of this pilot program is to determine if alternatively fueled trucks can help move WalMart toward that goal in addition to reducing environmental impacts.

WalMart has actively engaged several suppliers to develop and test these new technologies. This includes Arvin Meritor, Eaton, Peterbilt and International as well as smaller companies. WalMart will test these new technologies throughout 2009.

Walmart Offers $9 Smoking Cessation Starter Pack

Retailer Provides Motivation with a Value-Filled Option for Customers to Become Smoke-Free in 2009

To help motivated consumers quit smoking and to further its Operation Main Street efforts to save customers money on prescription medications, Walmart today announced that it has expanded its affordable pharmacy program to include a smoking cessation prescription starter pack for $9, the lowest price on the market.* The $9 starter pack of bupropion ER 150mg, the generic equivalent of Zyban, is now available at Walmart, Neighborhood Market and Sam’s Club pharmacies in a 17-tablet, 10-day supply. This announcement is part of the retailer’s January Healthy Living initiative, which aims to help Americans maintain their better eating, smoking cessation and exercise pledges in 2009.

Times are tight right now, and Walmart is committed to helping our customers maintain their healthy lifestyles in both good economic times and bad,” said Dr. John Agwunobi, Walmart senior vice president and president, health and wellness. “With our affordable smoking cessation offerings, we’re hopeful that smokers who are committed to quitting will be able to get the tools they need to stop smoking and still be able to afford everyday household items so they can live better.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 43 million Americans currently smoke, with 70 percent of them saying they want to stop. However – given today’s current economic landscape – money previously set aside for smoking cessation products may now be re-allocated toward items American families need most. Smoking cessation medication for $9 at Walmart may help reverse this trend as the bupropion ER starter pack – initiated at the request of both health care professionals and customers – is low-priced and affordable for consumers who want to quit.

"The public health community has long recognized that the cost of either cigarettes or smoking cessation medications has served as a determining factor for smokers to continue smoking or finally to decide to quit," said Cheryl G. Healton, Dr. P.H., President and CEO of the American Legacy Foundation. "This move by Walmart to provide science-based smoking cessation therapies that smokers can more easily afford is a huge step forward in helping millions of smokers finally quit for good. We applaud Walmart and hope other retailers will follow their example. It can only result in longer, healthier lives."

According to the CDC, smoking cessation treatments, including counseling and medications, can double quitting success rates. Asthma Sufferers Breathe Easier as Walmart Announces $9 Environmentally Sustainable Inhaler

As part of its continued commitment to provide accessible, affordable medications to those who need it most, Walmart today announced it will carry an environmentally friendly albuterol rescue inhaler starting at $9, the lowest-priced inhaler on the market. The ReliOn® Ventolin HFA inhalers, sold exclusively at Walmart*, will ease the transition as asthma sufferers are forced to replace their CFC-powered inhalers with new HFA inhalers in the new year to comply with an FDA mandate.

“While some HFA inhalers may sell for as much as $60 for certain brands, our $9 ReliOn Ventolin HFA inhaler will ease the financial burden for sufferers of asthma who should not go without these life-saving medications,” said Sandy Kinsey, Walmart’s divisional merchandise manager for pharmacy. “As an advocate for our customers, we’re committed to ensuring they have access to affordable medicine they cannot live without.”

According to the 2007 National Institutes of Health (NIH) asthma treatment guidelines, overuse of albuterol is a sign of uncontrolled asthma. With 60 metered inhalations, the ReliOn Ventolin HFA inhaler helps both patients and health care professionals monitor and track usage via the dose counter to identify overuse of albuterol. Additionally, it helps patients track how many puffs remain in their inhaler so they do not run out of their rescue medication when they need it most.
