Second Wal-Mart planned for Elk Grove

The company plans to build a 100,000-square-foot store at Bruceville and Poppy Ridge roads in the proposed Vineyard at Madeira shopping center, Wal-Mart spokesman Aaron Rios told The Bee on Thursday.

The store will be open 24 hours a day and will include a fresh grocery section.

The Wal-Mart store at Elk Grove Boulevard and Highway 99 will remain open, according to Rios.

Construction on the new store can begin as soon as permits are obtained from the city, Rios said.

To proceed, Wal-Mart needs approval only by Elk Grove city staff members because the retail giant purchased a site previously approved for a 150,000-square-foot Target store, Rios said.

Wal-Mart must apply for a building permit and follow the conditions of approval set for Target, Councilman Steve Detrick said Thursday.

Detrick, who led a successful grass-roots fight against a proposed Wal-Mart in northeast Elk Grove before being elected to the City Council, said he doesn't have a problem with the new project.

"If you really look at it, combined (the two Elk Grove stores) are under 200,000 square feet," Detrick said. "The one at Sheldon and Power Inn was proposed for 250,000 square feet."

Detrick said he expects the construction of the Wal-Mart store to trigger a burst of building at the center.

"The other businesses that have signed on have been waiting for the major anchor," Detrick said.
